FAQ
Choosing Your Safe
Which BlumSafe is right for me?
It comes down to three things: how many watches (and how many need winding), how much security you want, and where it’s going. The BlumSafe (steel or display door) holds up to 12 winders and fits a standard wall or cabinet. The Professional Junior adds a UL-listed lock, heavier steel and locking jaws. The Professional is our Class B burglary safe, fire rated to at least 50 minutes, with room for up to 18 winders. Want something free-standing? The Secure Display Cabinet is 58″ tall with four full-width shelves. Compare them side by side at Help Me Choose, or chat with us and we’ll help you configure it.
What's the difference between the standard BlumSafe and the Professional Junior?
The standard BlumSafe (steel or display door) and the Professional Junior share the same outside dimensions and the same modular interior, so both fit a standard wall between 16″ studs. The Professional Junior steps up the security: a UL-listed Securam lock, 12-gauge steel, anti-drill plates and patent-pending locking jaws that resist prying. It meets California DOJ gun storage standards and holds one more jewelry drawer above 12 winders. It’s steel door only.
Is there a fireproof watch safe?
Yes: the BlumSafe Professional, our Class B burglary safe, is fire rated to at least 50 minutes, with a fireproof door on every unit and an optional package that fireproofs the other five sides. No safe can promise to fully protect watches in a fire, since watches start to suffer at lower temperatures than safes are rated for, so read our fireproof safe guide before you decide.
Do you make a free-standing safe or floor safe?
Our built-in safes mount in a wall or cabinet, but we offer four free-standing options: the Secure Display Cabinet, the Secure Card Display Cabinet, the Concealment Cabinet and the Secure Armoire. All of them anchor to the wall or floor, so they can’t simply be carried off.
How secure is the display door window?
The window is half-inch, UV-protective polycarbonate with a scratch-resistant coating (3/8″ on the Secure Display Cabinet). Polycarbonate has about 200 times the impact resistance of glass and flexes instead of shattering, so it stands up to repeated hammer blows, and home burglars depend on speed. Behind it is the same steel safe as our steel door model, bolted into your wall. If maximum security matters more to you than display, choose a steel door model; the Professional is our most secure safe.
Can I store more than watches?
Absolutely. Our safes protect all kinds of valuables, and we have specialty lines for watches, jewelry and graded collectible cards. Collectors also use them for handbags, sneakers, documents and firearms; the Professional Junior and Professional meet California DOJ gun storage standards, and the Secure Display Cabinet offers a gun rack and a floor-mounted pistol lockbox.
How much does a BlumSafe cost?
Each product page shows a “starting at” price for the safe before options. To price your exact setup, pick one of the stock configurations, or click the red Custom Configure button to build your own, including winders, drawers, door and color, and see the price and a picture of it before you order.
Can I see a BlumSafe in person?
Yes. Our safes are on display at showrooms around the country, listed under the Support tab on our website, including Manhattan Center for Kitchen and Bath in New York and Palm Beach Center for Kitchen and Bath in Delray Beach, Florida. The full collection is at our showroom in Archdale, North Carolina, near Greensboro, by appointment through support@blumsafe.com.
Where are BlumSafes made?
In the USA. The BlumSafe (steel and display door) is built in North Carolina, and the Professional Junior, Professional and Secure Display Cabinet are built in Minnesota. Our cabinetry and the Winder Drawer Insert are built by American craftsmen in North Carolina and Ohio. Our winders and drawers come from Taiwan.
Do you offer custom colors?
Yes, on the Professional Junior, Professional and Secure Display Cabinet, in Prismatic powder-coat colors. Custom colors typically add $500 to $900 and about a month. Our standard finish is semi-gloss hammer black, and white is available on the BlumSafe (steel and display door). Our furniture pieces come in several woods and painted finishes, and for the Secure Armoire we can match existing furniture from a sample.
General Questions
What is your return or exchange policy?
Items can be returned or exchanged within 60 days of purchase. Because a BlumSafe is built into your wall, we’d much rather help you get the fit and configuration right before you order, so please ask us first. On a return, you pay return shipping, plus the 3% card processing fee if you paid by card, since our processor doesn’t refund it to us. Items that come back complete and undamaged carry a reboxing charge; items that come back damaged or incomplete carry a restocking fee of up to 25%. Custom and special-order items aren’t returnable, including the BlumSafe Professional, the Screen, the Secure Armoire, the Concealment Cabinet, the Concealment Mirror and special-order colors. International orders aren’t returnable either. Full details are on our Terms and Conditions page.
Are you an authorized dealer?
BlumSafe designs and builds its safes, and we’re an authorized dealer for Boxy watch winders and accessories. You’ll also find BlumSafes at a select group of custom closet and design showroom dealers, who can handle installation as part of a closet project. If you buy from a dealer, your service and support come from that dealer.
What is the warranty on the BlumSafe?
Our safes carry a 5-year warranty: the BlumSafe (steel or display door), Professional Junior, Professional, Secure Display Cabinet and our graded card safes and cabinets. Watch winders, jewelry drawers and the Winder Drawer Insert carry 2 years, and accessories carry 1 year. For the Concealment Cabinet and Secure Armoire, the safe inside carries 5 years and the furniture 1 year. The warranty covers defects; it doesn’t cover fire, water, theft or damage to the contents. If anything isn’t right, email support@blumsafe.com.
How can I leave a review on your website?
Scroll to the reviews at the bottom of any product page, such as our Steel Door BlumSafe.
Do you sell on Amazon?
No, by choice. Buying direct from blumsafe.com, or from one of our authorized showroom dealers, means configuration help from people who know the product, and parts and service straight from the maker.
Do you have an affiliate program?
Yes, for creators, collectors with an audience and other partners. Details are at blumsafe.com/affiliates, and questions go to affiliates@blumsafe.com.
I'm a designer, builder or closet company. Do you have a trade program?
Yes. We work with interior designers, architects, builders, and closet and cabinetry firms, and the display door BlumSafe is a favorite for built-ins. Apply to our Trade Program at blumsafe.com/professionals, or call and press 2 to reach our trade team.
Ordering & Shipping
Can I see a mockup of my configuration before I order?
Yes. Click Custom Configure on the product page (available now for our watch safes) to build your safe and see it. Want something the configurator doesn’t show, like a specific color? Email support@blumsafe.com with your configuration and we’ll reply within about one business day.
Why is my total higher than the "starting at" price?
The starting price is the safe before you configure it. Winders, jewelry drawers, display doors, colors and other options are added as you build it.
Do you offer discounts or coupon codes?
We don’t give out codes by chat, phone or our AI assistant. When we run a promotion, you’ll find it on blumsafe.com, on @blumsafe on Instagram and Facebook, and in our emails. Questions? Email support@blumsafe.com.
Do you accept checks or money orders or extend credit?
We don’t accept checks or money orders. For US and Canadian orders, we take Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal (including PayPal Credit), Amazon Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. You can also choose bank transfer or Zelle as your payment method at checkout. International orders outside Canada are paid by bank transfer.
Why was my credit card charged multiple times?
This usually happens when a transaction is declined because of an incorrect address, cvv code, or expiration date. When a transaction is attempted, a temporary authorization may be placed on your card. This occurs when our payment processor (PayPal processes our credit card payments) is testing to confirm that your credit card account is active and has credit available to accommodate transactions.
This can happen with each attempt. If you were declined four times, you may see four temporary authorizations on your card.
There is no need to contact us about these temporary authorizations.
If your order was declined, this temporary transaction will be removed within 1-5 business days after it first appeared.
– If your order was not declined, this temporary transaction will become an actual transaction amount when the transaction settles.
– You should be aware that all temporary authorization charges will temporarily reduce the account’s available credit by the anticipated amount.
For more information, please contact your bank or credit card company about how temporary transactions work and affect you as a credit cardholder.
Can I change my order after I place it?
Email support@blumsafe.com right away with your name, order number and the change. We’ll do our best, though changes aren’t always possible, especially once a custom item is in production or an order has shipped.
Are your products in stock?
Our core BlumSafes and winders are usually in stock and ship from North Carolina. The Professional Junior, Professional and Secure Display Cabinet are built to order in Minnesota, and our furniture pieces are built to order by American craftsmen in North Carolina and Ohio. If an item is sold out, the product page shows when it will be available.
When will my order ship?
In-stock BlumSafes (steel and display door) and accessories ship within two business days, and orders placed before noon Eastern often go out the same day. Our made-to-order pieces take longer, and each product page shows its current lead time. Custom colors and finishes add time, and lead times can stretch before the holidays. Not ready to receive your safe yet? Order to hold your place in line and add a note at checkout asking us to contact you before it ships.
How much is shipping?
To check shipping in the continental U.S. and Canada add the item(s) you want to your cart. In the “Shipping” box on the shopping cart page, click on “Calculate Shipping” and enter the state (or province for Canada) and zip code of the address you will be shipping to, and click “calculate”.
For orders outside the U.S. and Canada please contact us at support@blumsafe.com, and we will provide a shipping quote.
How long will it take to arrive?
In the continental US, an in-stock BlumSafe usually arrives 2 to 4 business days after it ships, by UPS or FedEx. Larger pieces, including the Professional and Secure Display Cabinet, ship by freight; the carrier calls you to schedule a delivery appointment.
How do I check my order status?
Order updates and tracking come by email from orders@blumsafe.com, so check your spam folder and add that address to your contacts. Made-to-order pieces also get regular delivery updates by email while they’re being built. For anything else, email support@blumsafe.com with your order number, or call and press 3 to reach customer care.
Part of my order is missing. What should I do?
Don’t worry yet. Safes usually ship in several boxes, each with its own tracking number, so the rest may still be on its way. Check all the tracking numbers in your shipping email. If everything has arrived and something is missing, email support@blumsafe.com with your name, order number and the missing item.
Can I use my own FedEx or UPS account?
Yes. Email support@blumsafe.com with your order and your account number, and we’ll set it up.
Can I pick up my order at a FedEx or UPS depot?
Yes. Enter your home address at checkout and add a note asking for depot pickup. Customer service will contact you to arrange it.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Beyond the US and Canada, we’ve shipped to collectors in more than 15 countries across Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. International rates will be calculated at checkout soon; until then, email support@blumsafe.com or use the chat on our site with the product you want, your country and full shipping address, and we’ll quote it. A BlumSafe or Professional Junior usually arrives 7 to 10 business days after it ships; pallet shipments vary. International orders are paid by bank transfer. Your country’s duties and VAT are in addition to the purchase price and are collected by the shipping carrier. International orders aren’t returnable. Our power adapters are dual voltage, so you’ll only need a plug adapter.
For International customers, who is responsible for customs charges, VAT etc.?
Our international customers are responsible for paying any customs charges, VAT/IVA that their home countries may charge. In our experience, depending upon the country, some shipping companies charge it, some do not. We do not charge VAT/IVA/Sales Tax in the US on your international order.
Do you ship to APO/FPO addresses?
We currently do not ship to APO or FPO addresses.
Blumsafe Questions
Are BlumSafe winders dual voltage, do they work on 220-240V outside the US?
Yes, the power adapter for the BlumSafe is dual voltage, and automatically adapts to your home voltage, whether you are 120V AC in the US or 220-240V in most of the rest of the world. If your country uses a different plug than the “Type A” two blade setup used in the US, all you’ll need to do is to get an inexpensive plug adapter to match the pin setup used by your power outlet (for example, an adapter that convert the US two blade plug to the “Type C” two pin plugs used in most of continental Europe). We do not sell the plug adapter, but you can get it at any hardware store.
Can I change the BlumSafe’s Combination?
Yes. Please see the instructions that came with your BlumSafe or find them under the Support tab — User Manuals on our website. You can also view the lock programming instruction video located under the Support tab — Videos, on our website.
If the battery runs down on my BlumSafe, will it lose the fingerprints and entry codes I programmed?
No, your codes and fingerprints should be fine. BlumSafes are equipped with non-volatile memory, meaning that your data is retained even if the batteries in your safe run down. In that event, simply replace with fresh batteries.
AND REMEMBER TO ALWAYS STORE YOUR BLUMSAFE BACKUP KEYS OUTSIDE OF YOUR SAFE — YOU WILL NEED THEM TO GET INTO YOUR SAFE IF YOUR BATTERIES DIE!
Is the BlumSafe fireproof? Waterproof?
If fire protection matters to you, yes, we make a fireproof safe: the BlumSafe Professional, our Class B burglary safe, is fire rated to at least 50 minutes. Every Professional gets a fireproof door with ceramic fiber insulation and an expanding gasket, and an optional package fireproofs the other five sides. Built into a wall or cabinetry, it’s even better protected than the lab test, which exposes all six sides. One honest caution: like virtually all fire-rated safes, it keeps the inside below 350°F, and watches can start to suffer at around 160°F to 180°F. So fireproofing protects watches to an extent, and insurance is still your real protection. Our standard BlumSafe, Professional Junior and display door models aren’t fire rated, though a wall safe gets some protection from the surrounding drywall. None of our safes are waterproof. For early warning, a smart door and temperature sensor is easy to add (see our blog post on monitoring your safe), or have your alarm company wire a contact to the safe.
What do I do if the BlumSafe is exposed to fire or water damage?
Your safe is not fireproof or waterproof. Should your safe be exposed to fire or water, make sure to have your safe is opened as soon as possible. Remove all watches and immediately bring them in for service, in the event you have any concern about water resistance. If your safe included firearms, remove them and have them cleaned and lubricated as soon as possible. Do not continue to store items in a safe that has been compromised by water or fire. You should purchase a replacement model in either case. Our warranty does not protect against fire or water damage.
Does BlumSafe provide insurance coverage for my safe or it’s contents in the event of damage or theft?
While BlumSafe provides a two-year warranty for the safe against defect as provided in Terms, BlumSafe does not insure your safe or the contents of your safe against loss or damage from fire, water, theft or other casualty or destruction. A homeowner’s policy or other insurance coverage should be purchased in an amount sufficient to cover the contents. Most homeowner’s policies require the purchase of riders or endorsements on items such as guns, watches, jewelry, coins, and other valuable collectibles. Should damage occur to your valuables, a claim should be made with your homeowner’s insurance. Check with your local insurance company for possible discounts that may be available with your purchase of the BlumSafe.
How many watches does the BlumSafe hold?
Up to 16 automatic watches: twelve on winders, plus four more on cushions in the base drawer. Watches that don’t need winding can go on a watch display shelf, which holds about four watches in the space of three winders, raising the total to 20. The interior is modular, so you can mix winders, jewelry drawers and display shelves and change it later. The Professional Junior holds up to 22, and the BlumSafe Professional up to 30 (24 with all 18 winder positions filled). Compare them at Help Me Choose.
Does the BlumSafe come with the AC adapter to run both the winders and safe?
The AC adapter that comes with the safe runs the winders, the lock is run on batteries, with a key backup (DON’T KEEP YOUR KEY IN THE SAFE — it defeats the purpose!). Use good quality batteries and they will last at least two to three years. The indicator on the LCD screen and audio beep alert tells you when the battery runs low.
Does the door swing left to right? Can it be switched?
Standard BlumSafes are hinged on the right. A left-hand hinge is available on every BlumSafe (steel or display door), the Professional Junior and the Professional; just choose it in the configurator on the product page, where the price shows (typically $200 to $300). The Secure Display Cabinet is right-hinged only.
Do I need to buy the Display Door at the same time as the safe?
Yes, choose your door when you order. The Display Door BlumSafe is built as its own model, with the lock at the bottom of the door so all 12 winders show through the window. If you think you may want a display door down the road, tell us before you order and we’ll talk through your options.
Does the safe control humidity?
Not built in. Because there’s power access at the bottom of the safe, you can run in a gun safe dehumidifier rod, or simply use a desiccant pack.
Installation Questions
What size wall opening do I need?
The BlumSafe and Professional Junior need an opening 14 3/8″ wide and at least 27″ tall, between 16″ on-center studs, with about 30″ of wall height for the flange. The Professional needs at least 37″ of height and 13″ of depth, or 39 1/2″ and 14 1/4″ with fireproofing. Measured drawings are under the Dimensions tab on each product page.
Can I install the BlumSafe in any wall? Can I put it in a cabinet? What are the dimensions?
Choosing the right location for your BlumSafe is the most important part of the process. The BlumSafe can be mounted in either a cabinet, wall unit or in a wall between two 16” on-center studs (which is typical US construction). If you have interior wall space for a 16” by 30” painting, you have a place for the BlumSafe. The dimensions of the BlumSafe can be found here. The BlumSafe requires at least 7 ½” of wall-depth to be mounted flush, which can be accomplished in several ways, or it can be mounted partially flush in a 2”X4” wall, using molding or framing pieces underneath the face plate of the safe for a finished look. For more information on installation choices and ideas, visit this page or see our BlumSafe installation video. The safe has mounting holes for both the 8” and 4” stud options. If you are mounting the BlumSafe in a wall, there should be no wires, pipes or ducts running in the stud pocket where the safe is located, unless you just run power from an adjacent stud pocket to a point below the safe (i.e., a power outlet about 18” above floor level).
Can I install a wall safe in a 2x4 wall?
Yes. A flush installation needs 7 1/2″ of wall depth, but our Frame lets you mount a BlumSafe or Professional Junior in a standard 2×4 wall with no construction. It holds the safe partly out of the wall with finished, angled trim, it’s popular in closets, and it comes off if you move.
Can the BlumSafe be installed between steel/metal studs?
The short answer is yes, you could attach the BlumSafe to steel studs (you’d drill pilot holes into the studs for the mounting bolts to screw into). Even though steel studs are kind of flimsy outside the wall, they gain sufficient rigidity to hold the safe when attached to the sheetrock. That being said, a better idea would be to reinforce the steel studs with pieces of wood 2”X4”s for the safe to screw into (you could fit them into the “U” shape of the steel studs). If you can’t do that, then another idea would be to slip several 2X4’s into the wall cavity when you cut it, stand them on the floor vertically, leaning against the steel studs, and rest the safe on top of the ends of those 2X4s.
Do your safes need to be mounted on walls?
The BlumSafe is designed for in-wall or partially in-wall placement, but can also be mounted very nicely in wall units and cabinetry. See this page for various installation options.
I am renovating my house and would like to prepare for your BlumSafe, do you have any installation guide to leave the hole with the necessary measurements?
New construction is the easiest way to get the most trouble-free installation. Basically, in an installation where you are using Sheetrock or drywall for the wall materials, you need at least 2”x8” studs (nominal), 16” on center, with at least 1/2” drywall, which provides more than the 7 1/2” of depth that the safe needs to sit flush on the wall. More information on installation can be found here. There should be no wires, pipes or ducts running in the stud pocket where the safe is, unless you just run power from an adjacent stud pocket to a point well below the safe (box for outlet about 18” above the floor). Or put your power in the adjacent stud pocket. The power adapter cable for the winders will come out the bottom of the safe and pop out of the wall above the floor to be plugged into the outlet.
If you have 18 minutes of your life to spare, see our full installation video for both the do-it-yourselfer and tradesman.
Do I need an electrician?
Not in most homes. The winders and display door lights plug into a regular outlet through low-voltage adapters; nothing is hardwired. Most people put an outlet about 18″ above the floor in the same or next stud bay, often a recessed outlet that hides behind the safe. The lock runs on batteries.
How does power connect the safe for the winders?
The power wire comes out of a hole at the bottom of the safe. It is meant to be plugged into a wall outlet, not hardwired. Generally, in the same stud cavity in which you would put the safe, you would open a small hole about 18” up from the floor, run the power wire through a wall plate like this one and then plug it into a power outlet on the wall (or on the wall behind the safe). See Figure 7 on this page or around the 7:30 mark on our BlumSafe Installation Video.
Where do I find the Installation Manual and Operating Instructions for the BlumSafe?
See our Support Page-User Manuals for the Installation and Operating Manual, and the Support Page-Videos for installation and lock programming videos.
Do you have any installers you recommend?
We don’t recommend specific installers, because every installation is different, whether it’s a wall, a closet or custom cabinetry. The good news: BlumSafes were designed for do-it-yourself installation, and a handyman, carpenter or handy homeowner can usually install one in under two hours. We’re glad to talk it through with you or your carpenter before you start. Share our installation notes and installation video with them first. Planning a closet project? Several of our showroom dealers install as part of the job.
How can I hide my BlumSafe?
A hinged painting or mirror is the classic answer, and our blog covers concealable hinges for both. We also make the Concealment Mirror, a frameless sliding mirror and The Screen, a 32″ digital photo frame that swings away; all three need a flush-mounted safe. In a closet, hanging clothes work well. See the Customer Gallery for ideas.
Should I plan for a second safe?
Collections tend to grow, so it’s worth thinking about at the start. Many collectors mount a second BlumSafe side by side or over and under, and couples often install one each, side by side. Planning the spot during your first installation makes the second one much easier.
Keypad and Fingerprint Lock
How do I program the keypad and fingerprint lock?
See the instruction manual for your BlumSafe or the videos for programming the keypad and fingerprint sensor.
Can I use the key instead of the keypad or fingerprint? Is it OK to leave the key in the safe?
The keys you receive with your safe are meant as an emergency backup, just in case the batteries run out on your electronic lock (don’t worry – they last for years of normal use and there is a low battery indicator on the LCD screen and low battery audio beep alert) or there is another malfunction. They will open your safe but not lock it. And as an emergency backup to open your safe, your keys SHOULD NEVER BE STORED IN THE SAFE! They should be kept outside the safe someplace you will remember.
The electronic lock LED panel is not working.
Contact us at support@blumsafe.com. The likely reason is that the LCD is not powered, and this could be due to a loose connection that occurred during the shipping process. We can send you illustrated instructions for remedying this – don’t try it before talking with us first.
I am having a hard time programming the fingerprint sensor?
A couple of thoughts to help you get themost out of the fingerprint function (versus using the keypad or backup key):
– The fingerprint sensors on virtually all safes have much less computing power than the fingerprint sensor on your smartphone. Accordingly, any safe’s fingerprint sensor won’t read as well, and we must give the safe the best chance it can to get a good read, which usually works.
-This is even more of an issue as we get older, when our fingerprints get thinner, particularly from the 50’s onward. Accordingly, it is worthwhile to look at your fingers and determine where you have the “best” fingerprint – where the ridges are highest and clearest.
–You can register 32 fingerprints in the BlumSafe. To optimize the chances of getting a good read, register several different “views” of each of the fingers you think you want to use, first registering the finger straight onto the pad (not pressing too hard), then registering under several different “fingerprints” that same finger, first turned a bit to the right, then to the left, then tilted up a bit and lastly down a bit. If you register 5 fingers that way, you will have a much better chance of a good first-time read.
–Think about the likely angle you approach the safe and place the finger on the sensor when you naturally open the safe – “straight in” isn’t how we often put our finger on the reader. Register your finger the way you are likely to place it.
–Note that fingerprints are often almost impossible to read after stepping out of a shower, or having your hands in water for a while.
My batteries died. How do I open the safe?
On the BlumSafe, plug the external backup battery box into the port in the finger nook under the keypad, or use your backup key behind the oval plate on the door. That’s why the key should never be stored inside the safe. Lost your key? Email support@blumsafe.com with the number on the sticker under the oval plate. The Professional Junior, Professional and Secure Display Cabinet use UL-listed locks whose batteries you change from outside the safe.
Can I use an RFID card or key fob?
Yes, on safes with the RFID option. Hold the card or fob up to the touchpad; there’s no card slot.
How much clearance does the keypad need?
The BlumSafe keypad stands about 1 1/4″ off the door, so a concealing panel or canvas needs about 1 1/2″ of depth. Plan on 1 1/2″ of clearance for the Professional Junior and Professional too.
Watch Winder Questions
IMPORTANT NOTE: BEFORE PLACING YOUR WATCHES IN THE BLUMSAFE, CONSULT WITH YOUR WATCH’S OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE DIRECTIONS AND THE BOXY BRICK WINDER DIRECTIONS THAT CAME WITH YOUR BLUMSAFE AND ARE AVAILABLE HERE.
What type of watch needs a watch winder?
The watch winders that we carry should be used for automatic watches only. Other watches such as a kinetic, battery (quartz) operated, or manual watches should not be placed in an active watch winder but may be stored in the drawer or on a shelf in the BlumSafe.
What is the correct setting for my watch?
All automatic watches have different TPD requirements, but on average most automatic watches need a minimum of 650-1200 TPD. The Boxy Brick winder provided with your BlumSafe accommodates this requirement.
To find the right setting for your watch we recommend the following procedure:
– Manually wind the watch by turning the crown 20-30 times. The watch winder will not wind a completely dead watch.
– Set the winder to the lowest TPD setting and bi-directional rotation. Place the watch in the winder and make sure it is seated properly and securely in the holder.
. Turn the winder on and periodically check to make sure the time is correct. Most automatics have a maximum of 40 hours of power reserve when fully wound so if the time is correct after 2 full days, this is the proper setting for your watch. If the time is incorrect, please set it to the next highest TPD setting and try again.
– If the time is incorrect, please set it to clockwise only and try again.
– If the time is incorrect, please set it to counter-clockwise only and try again.
– If the watch works while it is being worn but does not work in the winder, it may need to be serviced. When a watch is worn, the movements it experiences are not as smooth as in a watch winder, so while a watch may work when it’s worn it may not work when in the winder. Watch winders move very smoothly so if the lubrication inside the watch has congealed from not being in use, the watch may need to be serviced.
Below is a list of popular watch brands and the common settings for most of their watches. Specific models from some brands may have exceptions and may not work on the setting listed below. If this is the case please contact the watch manufacturer to determine the correct setting for your particular model.
BD=Bi-Directional, CW=Clockwise, CCW=Counter Clockwise
Where do I find the manual for the winders?
See our Support — User Manuals page for an electronic copy of the Boxy brick winder directions.
How long do I need to wind the watch or how long can I keep it in the winder?
We recommend leaving the watch in the winder at all times when it is not in use.
Are the winders noisy?
No. The Boxy Brick uses a Mabuchi motor and belt drive and is nearly silent; you won’t hear it with the safe closed. Over the years its gearbox may make a little noise. If silence matters most, for example in a bedroom, the Boxy BLDC uses a brushless motor with no gearbox and is super quiet.
Can I run my winders on batteries?
Yes, for up to three winders. The optional battery pack takes 4 D alkaline batteries (not included) and lasts about 6 months running three winders. We don’t recommend it for more than three.
Can I use the Boxy winders outside of the BlumSafe?
Yes, you may use the Boxy winders outside of the BlumSafe. Each winder has a power connector port on the back, and multiple winders can be stacked up to three high to use that power. You can purchase a power adapter from us here to power your winders outside the BlumSafe and you can also buy a powered winder tray here.
My winder has stopped working. The power light turns on but there is no motion. What should I do?
This issue could result from several problems, most likely a slipped belt. First, does the winder cup move around freely with no resistance? If so, the rubber belt that drives the rotor may have slipped or broken. See this video for directions on replacing the belt. It is likely that your existing belt is still good and just slipped off the pulleys and is loose in the winder enclosure. If it is torn, contact us and we will mail you a new belt. If your belt is in place and functional, then you may have another problem to troubleshoot. So then, try this: With the power off, put your hand in the winder cup and GENTLY push it inward and turn it a bit clockwise and then counterclockwise. Then put it back in the safe and try it and see if it works. Also, try moving both control switches on the face of the winder (the speed and the direction sliders) to all positions to see if this fixes it – sometimes it does because the switch position is in the middle of two settings.
My winder doesn’t work and the power light does not go on. What should I do?
This problem usually results in the winders not getting a complete electrical connection when stacked. Our winders pass electricity from one to the next by the metal electrical contact pads in the nubs underneath each winder. If there is a piece of packing paper, foam or other foreign substance blocking any of those four contact pads from getting or relaying electricity, your winder will not work. So in a column of winders where one or more winders does not seem to be powered, check all contact pads carefully for foreign substances. Next, make sure each winder in the column is stacked completely seated in the cavity of the winder (or drawer box) beneath it. The most likely cause of problem is that when you inserted a winder with Velcro on the back, that it caught the Velcro strip on the wall on the back of the safe before allowing the winder electrical contacts to seat properly. Pull that winder out carefully, and then reinsert it slowly, sliding it from the front straight inward, sitting directly on top of the winder below it with the electrical contact nubs lined up. Lean the lower winder out toward you a fraction of an inch while doing this, and seat the electrical contact nubs of the top winder in the cavities in the bottom winder BEFORE making contact with the back wall Velcro. Then just push and lock in the Velcro. This will allow you to have a good electrical connection.
Will the single power adapter be able to operate 12 winders?
Absolutely. It was designed to run twelve winders.
Are shelves included?
Every safe comes with one adjustable, velvet-covered shelf; the Secure Display Cabinet comes with four full-width shelves. You choose winders, jewelry drawers and watch display shelves when you configure your safe, and you can add more any time.
What's the difference between the Boxy Brick and the BLDC winder?
Both are modular and stack in your safe. The Brick uses a quality Mabuchi motor and belt drive with 3 speeds; it’s nearly silent, and Rob has run his own collection on them since 2016. The BLDC uses a brushless motor with no gearbox, offers 15 speeds and stays super quiet as it ages. Collectors coming from a premium standalone winder often prefer the BLDC. Note that the BLDC’s controls are underneath, so you lift it out to adjust it.
Can I turn off some winders?
Yes. Each winder has its own power, speed and direction settings. On the Brick, the controls are on the front, so you can adjust it right in the safe.
Can I fix a winder myself?
Usually, yes. The most common service item is the drive belt, which is easy to spot and inexpensive to replace with our belt replacement videos (Boxy Brick, Boxy BLDC), or you can send the winder back to us. Because our winders stack like Legos, you just pull out the one that needs attention; the rest keep running, unlike traditional winder cabinets that go out for service all at once.
Should I use the plastic domes inside the safe?
No. The domes that come with Boxy winders are only for using them outside a safe.
Do you have cushions for small or large wrists?
Yes. We offer smaller cushions for small wrists and larger cushion positions for oversized watches and long bracelets. Lost a cushion? Email support@blumsafe.com.
What happens to my winders in a power outage?
There’s no built-in backup, but your watches keep running on their own power reserve. For longer outages, plug the safe into a battery backup power strip, like an APC unit.
Can I start without winders and add them later?
Yes, everything is modular. Install the winder power adapter when you install the safe, with the wire taped to the floor of the safe, and you can add winders, jewelry drawers or shelves any time.
